Art
Art is a vital part of the BGA Primary curriculum as it provides the possibilities for the children to express themselves and grow, regardless of their competence in verbal and written communication.
The cross-curricular nature of Art offers a setting for the children to apply knowledge and skills from a number of other subjects including DT, English, Maths, and Science.
Art in Early years
In the foundation, stage Art is explored through the continuous provision and comes under Expressive Arts and Design. There are two strands that fall under this heading: being imaginative and exploring and using media and materials. This enables children to develop their own creativity and gives them the freedom to explore their own lines of inquiry. Art is a continual development in Early Years and children have access to a ‘creative area’ all the time both indoors and outdoors. At Gateway we believe the children really excel having opportunities to develop creatively so we ensure there are plenty of meaningful chances for the children to do so.
Art in Key stage 1 and 2
In Key Stage 1 and 2 children’s foundations skills are developed further and have more of a focus on developing specific Art skills. Basic skills are introduced and then built upon, including drawing, printmaking, sketching, painting and making. Skills are revisited and the use of ongoing sketchbook work underpins this process. Here at Gateway we develop Art using a theme and try and link Art to the topic we are learning. This provides an excellent way to enrich the curriculum and allows children to make connections with other areas of learning further developing their knowledge and understanding.
